Sad to say, but you will know the brook to which this poem refers. It runs through the New Hall Valley. Pollution of our country’s lakes, rivers and streams has become a national scandal. Anne’s poem, however, ends with a note of optimism.

Have you been ♫Down to the (Middleton) Woods today♫! It is now summertime and the bluebells are over, but this poem by Anne Nash may inspire you to take a walk there next April/May. The flowers are a wonderful sight and the walk is not too far. Park your car in Middleton Village and follow the lane leading west past ‘The Green Man’. The woods abut the A446 route.

The "House by the Ebrook" may still be seen near the bridge over the stream, just below New Hall Mill. The following piece, which perhaps bears the "stamp of modernity" in some of its numbers, is based on a tradition in a Sutton family once well known in the district. The Ebrook is the stream that runs out of Sutton Park, under the main Birmingham road, and then on to New Hall and Penns.
